Dr. Raghunadharao Digumarti (MBBS, MD, DM, FAPAS, FRCP (UK), FACP) is Professor and Head of Medical Oncology at the MNJ Institute of Oncology & Regional Cancer Centre, Hyderabad, and is one of India’s most senior leaders in medical oncology, cancer research, and clinical trial development.

He has played a pioneering role in establishing cancer care infrastructure and research capacity across India. Dr. Digumarti led the development of a comprehensive cancer hospital in Visakhapatnam for Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, from December 2013 to March 2020. Earlier, he established the first Medical Oncology Department and comprehensive cancer care centre for the state of Andhra Pradesh at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, in 1989, along with the state’s first hospital-based cancer registry.

Dr. Digumarti has been instrumental in advancing cancer research and clinical trials in India. He pioneered Phase I cancer drug trials in the country and has completed over 80 clinical trials across all phases since 1993. He also established the first hematopoietic stem cell transplant unit at NIMS in 2003 and was the first ACRP-certified Clinical Research Physician in India in 2004. He initiated the DM Medical Oncology programme at NIMS in 2005 and founded the Medical Oncologists Forum for the state the same year.

His contributions extend to national cancer surveillance and prevention. Dr. Digumarti established the first population-based cancer registry for Hyderabad under the ICMR-NCRP in 2012 and served as National Coordinator for training government doctors in cancer screening and prevention under the NRHM-NCD programme from 2011 to 2013. He has also led multiple national and international research collaborations, including partnerships with the University of Oxford, Breast International Group, and several leading Indian research institutions.

Dr. Digumarti’s work has been recognised through numerous honours, including the Dr. B C Roy National Award for Excellence in Promotion of Oncology (2016). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (2019), the American College of Physicians (2020), Sigma Xi (2025), and the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences, where he currently serves as President.

He has authored 284 peer-reviewed publications, contributed nine book chapters, and written two monographs, reflecting a lifelong commitment to advancing cancer care, research, and education.
